Artist’s Statement: “The ‘Negotiation’ was between myself and Mandy Johnston, negotiating our understanding of our work processes as well as a commentary on human interaction in general. In this work, I use my understanding of a graffiti language as a constituent element of the city and Mandy uses salt as a key reason for human interaction outside the family unit. Salt is a commodity that implies exchange, trade and interdependency between people in a broader society.

The culmination of this collaboration was an installation that comprised a maquette made out of cardboard, conceived for a public sculpture design, and blowing up the design of the maquette into an imaginary city drawn out of salt. The imaginary city alludes to how the language of graffiti is prevalent throughout the city of Joburg.”
